ABC’s of Shibari

A project built one letter, one tie, and one day at a time.

ABCs of Shibari is a 26-part self-portrait series exploring the relationship between rope, the body, and form. Over the course of 26 consecutive days, I used self-tying to construct the letters of the alphabet with my body, creating one letter at a time from A through Z.

The project began as a simple visual premise but became an extended study of physical vocabulary. Each letter presented a new structural and spatial problem, requiring me to reconsider the possibilities of my body through movement, flexibility, balance, restraint, and proportion. Rope became both a binding material and a tool for composition, allowing me to hold different parts of my body in place and construct forms that existed somewhere between gesture, sculpture, and language.

My background as a yoga instructor became an important part of the process, giving me an expanded awareness of alignment, flexibility, and movement as I worked through increasingly demanding shapes. The result is a series in which the body is simultaneously performer, subject, and medium.

The alphabet provided a fixed structure, but the process itself was open-ended. Each letter revealed unexpected possibilities within the limitations of the body and the rope. ABCs of Shibari is ultimately an exploration of how restraint can create form, and how a familiar system of language can be translated into something physical, intimate, and embodied.
